Preparation is key

Before you begin any painting job, you need to prep. If you have wallpaper on your walls, we recommend removing it. You need to procure the appropriate tools and materials. You will need-

  • Plastic sheeting
  • Painters tape
  • Putty knife
  • Hot water
  • Vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Scoring tool
  • Gel stripper
  • Sponge or cloth
  • Spackling paste
  • Sandpaper

If you are dealing with large amounts of wallpaper, be prepared to spend an entire weekend on this project. Don’t stress out too much if it takes you longer than you initially plan.

Also, keep in mind that not all wallpaper is created equal. Some types, like waterproof or vinyl wallpaper, are harder to remove than traditional wallpaper.

For an extensive step-by-step guide to painting over wallpaper (if you don’t want to remove it) check out our tips here.

Once you have removed your wallpaper, your preparations are not finished. Before you begin painting, you need to thoroughly clean your walls to ensure the best results of your painting project.

Be sure to read our blog post on the most effective way of cleaning your walls to prep for painting. We have outlined all the steps you need to take in an easy to follow guide.

I’m ready to paint, now what?

You may think you are ready to paint, but there are a few questions you should find answers to before you start.

What is in the paint?

When you are shopping for your paint, make sure you find out precisely what is in it. Look for brands that are free of harmful chemicals, such as VOCs. For your baby’s sensitive lungs, you should also look for paints that are latex-free.

Some paint brands are specially formulated not to disturb existing respiratory issues or specific chemical sensitivities people may have. When it comes to your new baby, you can never be too careful.

Will the color affect my baby’s mood?

Colors can affect our mood in ways that we may not understand. The right color can bring a room to life. Choose the right colors to help spread positive energy to your newest family member.

Here is a brief intro to some of the most popular colors and the feelings they may promote:

  • Green helps you feel calm and rested and can reinforce self-esteem
  • Blue elicits tranquility and feelings of peace
  • Red is a color of passion and energy and can be a great accent color in your baby’s room
  • Yellow is a color of warmth, and it brings a feeling of coziness and cheerfulness
  • Purple is a vibrant color that breeds energy and strength
  • White is a color of purity, faith, and joy

Keep in mind that darker colors can make your spaces feel more cramped, and lighter colors can impart a more open sense.

Some colors, like beige or lavender, may even help your baby sleep more deeply. Ultimately, you should choose a color to which you are drawn. Remember, you will be spending almost as much time as your baby in this new room.

How much paint do I need?

The amount of pain you need to buy depends on the square footage of the area and the quality of paint you are using. Where it may take five gallons of cheap paint for an average room, a higher-quality paint may require only three gallons.

Talk to a sales associate at your local paint store for help. They should be able to give you a more expert opinion on your particular needs.

How durable should the paint be?

Durability comes down to the finish of the paint you select. Generally, the more matte your paint is, the less you will be able to see marks or imperfections.

In the end, though, the choice is yours. Life happens; you will find marks and scraps no matter what you do. If you are worried about visible marks, consider choosing a lighter color as they are less susceptible to marring.

How early should I paint?

Honestly, the earlier you paint, the better. You want to give the fumes enough time to dissipate. Depending on the paint you choose, it can take months for the fumes to disperse fully.

At the very least, you should wait a full two days before moving back into the room. The paint should be thoroughly dry by then, and most of the really harmful fumes should be gone.

Am I ready to begin painting?

If you have followed our steps for wallpaper removal and wall cleaning, then the answer to this question should be yes. You also need to make sure you have cleared the room of furniture and paraphernalia.

Also, you should either tape or remove light and socket covers. Tape molding or floorboards to protect them from stray paint.

How old is my home?

If your home was built before 1978, you might have to worry about the possibility of lead paint. If this is the case, you will need to take precautions.

You should not try to sand or remove lead paint without professional help. If you are not sure, contact a certified professional to help you decide.

Once you have answered all these questions to your satisfaction, you are ready to begin painting! All that is left is to select the perfect color and get busy.
